How to extend the service life of batteries?
Jan 13,2026
Strictly control the charging and discharging rhythm to prevent damaging charging and discharging
Avoid deep discharge: Deep discharge of batteries (when the battery is depleted to the cut-off voltage) can seriously damage the plates or cells. Daily use should follow the principle of "shallow charging and shallow discharging". Charge the battery promptly when the remaining charge is 20% -30%, and the depth of a single discharge should not exceed 70%.
Eliminate overcharging and undercharging: Overcharging can cause electrolyte boiling and cell bulging; Undercharging can cause sulfurization of lead-acid battery plates and capacity degradation of lithium batteries. When charging, use the original or matching charger, turn off the power promptly after fully charging, and do not float charge for a long time.
Control discharge current: Avoid sudden discharge of high current (such as frequent start-up of high-power equipment), as high current can exacerbate electrode polarization and cell heating, reducing cycle life. Industrial power type batteries (such as forklift batteries) should avoid overloading during use.
Create a suitable working and storage environment
Stay away from high temperatures and direct sunlight: High temperatures are the "number one killer" of battery life, and for every 10 ℃ increase in temperature, battery life may be reduced by half. It should be placed in a cool and ventilated place, away from heat sources such as furnaces and engine exhaust pipes in industrial settings; Avoid enclosed environments during charging to prevent heat accumulation.
Maintain good insulation in low-temperature environments: Low temperatures can reduce battery activity, decrease discharge capacity, and decrease charging acceptance. Outdoor batteries used in winter (such as car and electric vehicle batteries) can be equipped with insulation sleeves to avoid low temperature power loss.
Long term idle maintenance: Before idle, charge the battery to 70% -80% (lithium batteries are recommended to be 40% -60%) and place it in a dry environment at 0-25 ℃; Recharge electricity every 1-2 months to prevent electrode plate vulcanization or irreversible damage to battery cells caused by power loss.
Keep the battery clean and structurally intact
Regularly clean the appearance: wipe the dust and oil stains on the surface of the battery with a damp cloth to prevent corrosion of the shell; When oxidation rust appears on the pole, clean and apply Vaseline or specialized rust inhibitor in a timely manner to avoid poor contact and pole corrosion.
Check structural integrity: Regularly inspect the shell for cracks, bulges, leaks, and loose pole connections; Industrial battery packs need to check the torque of connecting bolts to prevent excessive contact resistance from causing heating.
